Gimmelwald to Mrren WENGEN TO MNNLICHEN Mnnlichen has always been one of the better hikes in Lauterbrunnen where an upward trail leaves from Wengen via the Eiger Ultra Trail. The Rotstock Via Ferrata is an epic climb right next to the famous North Face Wall of Eiger. And you are going to gain a lot in elevation, so pace yourself in this part of the hike. While going to Gimmelwald you are going to cross Mrren, another famous village in the valley. Gimmelwald is a beautiful mountain village, which at 1367 m above sea level. Very much. The train ride, although short, is a good one, as the train climbs out of Interlaken and then clings to the river valley and weaves its way slowly towards higher elevations. Before coming here again, one hike on my radar was the long and sometimes challenging looped hike out from Lauterbrunnen, to Mrren, Gimmelwald and back down the valley. The funicular was subject to landslides and was replaced by the current tram in 2006. OPTION 2: The second option is to get the Swiss Travel Pass, which gives you unlimited train, bus, and (many) cable car rides but its pretty expensive at around $100 USD per day so if you dont travel each day it isnt worth it. Thus the most adventurous way to go between the two villages was to hike, and we opted for The North Face. Trmmelbach Falls is one of those "must see"natural wonders. At this point, you can take a breath and admire the impact of nature. Footwear traction or flexible crampons were essential, the mountain views were non-existent, and Trmmelbach Falls was closed for the season, but the route was perfectly enjoyable. It is an idyllic Swiss mountain village which is situated at the foot of the Schilthorn mountain peak, which becomes easily accessible by cable car. The Iconic Murren to Lauterbrunnen takes centre piece on this hike. Bachalpsee is one of the most stunning alpine lakes in Switzerland, surrounded by wildflowers and adorned with an incredible backdrop of glacial mountains. They will get you around where you need to go and around the area quickly. The Lauterbrunnen valley has many waterfalls cascading from the mountain tops. So all the hike is up to 5 hours. Here you will look up towards Eiger Mountain and if you read the signs, you can even identify the path the climbers use to scale the North Face wall of Eiger. I personally prefer the spring and summer months in Switzerland, which are April through to September, when temperatures are warm, and the landscapes are vividly green. Bachalpsee is one of the most spectacular lakes in Switzerland and probably one of the most incredible lakes you will find on a hike near Interlaken. Its a 12km round-trip hike back to Baregg with over 1000m of incline. Jungfraujoch Day Trip 7. OPTION 1: Switzerland trains, buses, and cable cars are EXPENSIVE! The full hike is 4.9 km and takes roughly 2 hours past some of the best scenery in the Lauterbrunnen region. On top of that, there are various hiking trails in Lauterbrunnen. So still pace yourself. >> If the hike isnt thrilling enough, you can always give the Via Ferrata a whirl. If you can manage the steep incline there isnt much more to worry about. If you feel tired at the end of the hike, you can take a cable car to Stechelberg and then a bus to Lauterbrunnen. Hiking 10. The path leads past several of the many famous waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley. The cable car runs every day from 6am to 11.45pm and takes only 5 minutes to Gimmelwald. A perfect tour for hikers and trail runners. Relatively simple hiking although the incline is quite steep and air does get thin. This is one of the most exhilarating hiking experiences you can have while based in Interlaken. No drop-offs are ever apparent on either side of the trail. After that: just huge mountains. Trummelbach Falls is among the most famous of those 72 waterfalls At 20,000 liters of water per second, this roaring waterfall is an impressive sight. These trains run pretty consistently (every half hour or so) and will bring you to the base of the valley, where you will continue your trip. Once you reach Kleine Scheidegg I really suggest having a longer rest, have lunch, drink coffee or tea, despite the fact that another part of the hike is always down, its still not that easy as foot and joints are getting tired pretty fast once you walk just down and down. If you walk back, it will be a much shorter hike back, as you go down all the time, maybe 2h or less. 14 hours in the mountains is like 20 hours on flat ground in the Netherlands. Schnige Platte to First is one of the top-favorite hikes for travelers and is sometimes called the Faulhornweg, after the Faulhorn peak that you will climb as part of this hike. This dreamlike day of hiking along off-the-beaten-path trails in the Swiss Alps and Lauterbrunnen Valley turned out to be an experience of a lifetime for us. Thats a very sweet small village on the mountain meadows. This is featured in one of the famous James Bond films, and the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant (at the top) contains the Bond World 007 exhibit. The tourism office promotes this hike by saying that you will see six pearls in six hours, such as; All of this mountain scenery is spectacular, but most people will agree that the best of the six is the view from the Faulhorn, with the Jungfrau massif on one side and Lake Brienz on the other. I think if you wish to have an ultimate adventure in Lauterbrunnen, thats the way to do it. From here, it is another 6km on foot through this picturesque valley. Gimmelwald 3. So the hike to Wengen is much easier, faster, but still pretty steep Theres no way around it if you hike in Lauterbrunnen and want to reach places higher: trails are going to be steep. Once you head back from Gimmelwald, some hiking up will have to be done, up to Mrren, but from there, its going to be all the way down. Its relatively easy to get there with the cable car or you can refer to an earlier hike on this list: Schynige Platte to First if you want to take the long adventurous route. On the descent from the top to the valley floor you pass by several waterfalls and fast flowing rivers. Recommend taking the Allmendhubel lift to start the hike and finishing in Gimmelwald. It was opened back in 1891 and its highest elevation is 1,638m (5,374ft). The trail follows along the edge of the cliff, alongside the Lower Grindelwald Glacier or at least where the glacier used to be. You can start this hike in either Mrren or Grutschalp and its a great way to do something active either before or after a visit to the Schilthorn. Most families will easily navigate their way to Rotstockhutte with only 300-400m of elevation. There are one or two ski lifts dotted around and the paths you walk on are gentle and more like the blue run on a ski slope. 10 AWESOME HIKES NEAR LAUTERBRUNNEN: Lauterbrunnen is the most picturesque valley in Switzerland and is situated perfectly amidst many famous hiking routes. All of these dwellings were made from wood and the exterior draped in flowers, with garden plots awash with all different varieties of wildflowers. From Trmmelbach Falls, return to Lauterbrunnen by bus or follow the riverside trail past meadows, small farms, and waterfalls on every side. Once you arrive at the station it is very easy to make many new connections to various other locations or you can easily get out at Lauterbrunnen and begin this and many other walks from there. But many people will do similar where they take the cable cars to Mnnlichen before walking a more leisurely downhill route back to Wengen. The rustic village of Gimmelwald, hanging on a cliff high above Switzerland's Lauterbrunnen Valley, is just this side of heaven. The hike from to town center of Lauterbrunnen is just .5 kilometers but it can be added on to part of a loop trail all the way up through Gimmelwald and Murren. The village itself is charming and has a great history and character. The hike, in the beginning, is very steep, especially the first 2-3 kilometers. It was an intense experience and something I shall never forget. One of the most popular short hikes near Lauterbrunnen is the Staubbach Falls trail, which is just .6 kilometers but very highly rated. Want more details and photos? This is a popular trail for hiking and running, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. With that said, most day-trippers reach the village by the Stechelberg Gondola, which is located in the valley below. Alongside the trail is the river and it has certainly become a popular place, with tourists and day-trippers coming to admire this lovely landscape.
